Professor Michael Hornberger | Director

Professor Michael Hornberger is a trained neuroscientist with over 25 years research and data analytics experience in ageing and neurodegenerative conditions. He studied at the universities of Osnabruck (Germany) and Vienna (Austria) before completing his PhD at University College London. He worked then at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit of Cambridge University before relocating to Sydney Australia with his wife Eneida. He returned then to Cambridge, where he worked at the Department for Clinical Neuroscience, before taking up the Chair of Applied Dementia Research at the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. Since 2025, he is Professor of Applied Dementia Research at the University of Southampton and member of the Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre (IDeAC) and the Institute of Life Sciences.

Michael’s work is focused on translating research outcomes into applied health outcomes. He is particularly interested in understanding how research evidence relates to real-world outcomes. He and his team use data science techniques to answer those questions, including normative modelling and artificial intelligence approaches. Michael is also passionate about continued professional education. He has taught health and social care professionals, as well as third sector members on research and evidence base methodology. His mission is to enable health and social care practitioners to use better evidence-based thinking to guide their clinical and social care decision making.
